AMMON — Can you drink 32 ounces of eggnog and run a mile? A city event is challenging participants in a fun run to kick off the holidays.
The city of Ammon is bringing back the “Nogathon” for the second year on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at McCowin Park.
“We are excited to do it!” said Randal Miller, Ammon recreation director. “It’s just going to be a fun event.”
It’s a quarter-mile course, so there will be four laps to complete, with an 8-ounce cup of eggnog to drink before each lap. Since it’s considered a fun run, there won’t be any winners receiving first, second, or third place.
Participants are encouraged to register by Friday, Oct. 25, to guarantee a shirt and swag bag full of goodies. Click here to register. If you want a youth-sized t-shirt, email Miller at [email protected] with the size of the shirt.
“It’s a $15 entry fee,” Miller said. “You can register after that, but if you register after Oct. 25, you are not guaranteed a t-shirt and swag bag.”
Reed’s Dairy will provide the eggnog for this year’s event, and Miller expressed his gratitude to them.
“They have had a tough year after their fire but they have agreed to come back out and donate all the eggnog. We really, really appreciate that,” he said.

Miller added that the city has partnered with The Community Food Basket of Idaho Falls and Eastern Idaho Community Action Partnership (EICAP).
“If you bring an item of food (nonperishable) or a cold weather item of clothing or a toy to donate, Kneaders will give you a free French toast card. That’s for runners and spectators, anybody coming out,” he said.
The Nogathon is coming back this year because the first year was so successful. Miller told EastIdahoNews.com that since it was a new event last year, they expected about 50 people to participate. Instead, over 100 people came out.
“We had about 175 show up to run. We were blown away by the attendance last year. So this year, we are hoping for 200 or more,” Miller said.
It’s possible to get sick during the race due to the amount of eggnog consumed. He said there will be strategically placed trash cans around the course.
If you haven’t tried the Nogathon or if you want to return, Miller encourages it.
“You get a cool story to tell,” he said. “We encourage everybody to come dressed in fun holiday costumes.”
