Kumho Petrochemical Group’s subsidiaries have been enhancing their safety and environmental management, organizing a group-wide committee to share their efforts and check their common strategic goals.
Last year, the group included integrated data on safety and environmental management in its annual sustainability report to enhance transparency.
Kumho Petrochemical, the group’s flagship subsidiary, has reinforced safety management at its plants in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, and Ulsan, with smart equipment, such as artificial intelligence-powered cameras monitoring fire risks, gas leaks and worker behavior.
The company plans to expand these systems with wearable devices.
Kumho P&B Chemicals, which specializes in industrial raw materials, has implemented risk assessments to proactively remove potential hazards.
It also conducts regular safety meetings before work to ensure compliance with safety standards.
In terms of environmental management, the company invested in facilities monitoring odor-causing and air pollutants. It also invested in a system monitoring flare stacks at its Yeosu plant to prevent incomplete combustion of exhaust gases.
Kumho Mitsui Chemicals, a joint venture between Kumho Petrochemical and Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals, carried out comprehensive risk assessments of the second plant during its commissioning phase to mitigate potential hazards.
It has also hired more workers monitoring the safety of factories during their operations.
Regarding its efforts for the environment, the company decided to recycle organic materials in wastewater from the second plant as raw materials for its production, reducing water pollutants.
Kumho Polychem, a producer of ethylene propylene diene monomer, has reduced risks in the workplace by holding regular meetings on safety and environmental management.
It has also minimized volatile organic compounds and odors through the installation of a leak detection and repair system, which will be completed by the end of next year. (Advertorial)
