Man to appear in court charged with possession of explosives following security alert in Co Derry

A man is due to appear in court charged with possessing explosives with intent to endanger life.

The man, who is aged in his 50s, was arrested following a security alert in the Ranaghan Road area of Maghera on Wednesday, December 11, which saw a number of homes in the area evacuated.

He has now been charged with five offences, possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances, possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property, cultivating cannabis, possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply, and possession of a Class B controlled drug.

He is due to appear at Dungannon Magistrates Court on Saturday, December 14.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A man, aged in his 50s, has been charged with five offences: possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances, possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property, cultivating cannabis, possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply, and possession of a Class B controlled drug.

"He is expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 14 December 2024. As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

"This follows from a security alert in the Ranaghan Road area of Maghera earlier this week."
