North Belfast counselling service's funding boost to expand support for young people

2 weeks ago 256

A Belfast counselling service has received a massive funding boost that will allow it to expand its life-changing support services.

The Horizon Project, a youth-led initiative based in North Belfast and tackling the mental health crisis among young people, has received new funding through the Young Gamechangers Fund (YGF). This grant of £10,000 will provide 333 hours of free or low-cost trauma-informed counselling to young people who might otherwise have no access to critical mental health support.

Youth mental health challenges are on the rise in Northern Ireland, with the prevalence of anxiety and depression among young people 25% higher than in other UK regions. The Horizon Project is working to ensure young people receive the care they need before reaching a crisis point.

Caoimhin Mac an Ultaigh, from The Horizon Project, emphasized the urgency of this initiative: “We don’t want the next generation to grow up thinking youth suicide and crisis are just part of life. Every young person deserves access to support before they reach breaking point. This funding brings us closer to making that a reality.”

The mental health crisis among young people in Northern Ireland remains a pressing issue, with studies highlighting alarming rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide. By prioritising early intervention and community-based support, The Horizon Project aims to create a lasting impact on youth mental well-being.

The Young Gamechangers Fund, a partnership between Co-op Foundation, Co-op, the #iwill Fund, Restless Development, & Global Fund For Children, supports grassroots initiatives led by young people, empowering them to address urgent challenges in their communities.

The Horizon Project’s funding is one of 100 young person-lead initiatives receiving funding across the UK.
