Police have 'no plans' to introduce public dash-cam reporting road safety scheme

6 months ago 243

The PSNI has said that it has no plans to introduce a scheme that would allow members of the public to report dash-cam footage of dangerous driving, similar to the one in place in England and Wales.

Operation Snap and the National Dash Cam Safety Portal are schemes that have been put in place in England and Wales that allow members of the public to submit videos and photographic evidence of driving offences to the police.

It can address a wide-range of issues such as dangerous driving, using a mobile phone, driving without due care and attention, careless driving, overtaking on solid white lines, not in proper control, traffic light contravention or any other road traffic offence provided it is clearly made out in the submitted media.

In 2023, the NDSP received 33,531 submissions from across England and Wales with around 70% of these leading to police action such as penalty points or prosecution.

A recent Freedom of Information request to the PSNI asked the force if it had dash cam reporting scheme in place and if not whether there were any plans to introduce a similar scheme in Northern Ireland, with the PSNI saying that due to budgetary pressures it has no plans to implement a scheme.

It said: "We can advise that PSNI do not currently have such a scheme. There are no plans to take forward the introduction of such a scheme due to the severe budgetary pressures faced by PSNI and the consequent lack of personnel and resources that such a scheme would require."
