PSNI makes arrest after three officers allegedly assaulted in early hours

A man has been arrested over the alleged assault of three police officers in the early hours of Friday morning.

The PSNI says the incident happened in the Dublin Road area of south Belfast shortly after 12.20am. According to their report, police noticed a car being driven suspiciously and stopped the it to speak to the driver who then tried to make off. It was then, police say, that the driver drove a short distance while "holding onto an officer and punching the officer to the face" and also "grabbed and pulled two other officers".

A man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including three counts of assault on police, resisting police and dangerous driving.

Inspector Green said: "Shortly after 12.20am, while on patrol, officers noticed a car being driven suspiciously in the Dublin Road area of the city centre. They stopped the car and spoke with the driver, who attempted to make off from police.

"He then drove the car a short distance, while holding onto an officer and punching the officer to the face. He also grabbed and pulled two other officers.

"The man, aged 35, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including three counts of assault on police, resisting police and dangerous driving. He remains in police custody at this time."

Inspector Green added: "Thankfully, none of the officers received serious injuries during this incident, however this could have had very serious consequences.

"Our investigation into this incident is ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed a grey Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian in the city centre between midnight and 12.20am to contact Police on 101 quoting reference 27 of 13/12/24.
