WEST YELLOWSTONE, Montana — The National Park Service announced Wednesday that roads in Yellowstone National Park will open Friday, May 12, at 8 a.m. to public motor vehicle traffic, weather permitting.

The roads scheduled to open are:

South Entrance to West Thumb West Thumb to Old Faithful (Craig Pass) West Thumb to Lake Village Tower-Roosevelt to Tower Fall

The road from Canyon Village to Tower Fall (Dunraven Pass) will open May 26 at 8 a.m., if weather permits.

The park’s North Entrance (Gardiner, Montana) and Northeast Entrance (Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana) are open year-round to all traffic with no restrictions. Both road corridors have been repaired after last year’s historic flood event.

Park services are limited in the spring, so be prepared if you decide to visit.

Many areas of the park are still experiencing winter conditions. The park service is asking visitors to watch for quickly-changing weather conditions and possible temporary closures due to late spring storms.

Animals often cross the road when the snow is deep. The severe winter and above-average snowpack have made big animals stressed and weak, and high snow banks may make it difficult for wildlife to get off the road quickly.

“Be mindful of this as they endure the hardest part of their year. Do not crowd or push the wildlife. Stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves and 25 yards from all other wildlife,” officials say in a news release.
