The woman at the heart of a major Garda investigation following her death on a ferry en route to Rosslare has been locally identified as Mary Cash.
Ms Cash, 39, was part of a group travelling to Rosslare Euro Port in Co Wexford from Fishguard in Wales when the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.
It has emerged that Ms Cash was Irish but resided in the UK. She was reportedly travelling with family and friends to a funeral in Co Kildare when she was discovered dead in a bathroom cabin on a Stena Line ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare.
The grim discovery was made approximately 35 miles off the Wexford coast. The captain issued an emergency distress call, leading to a significant Garda presence, including officers from the Armed Support Unit and the Public Order Unit, boarding the vessel upon docking.
A man was arrested by Gardai and remained in custody as of this afternoon. A post-mortem is being conducted today, and sources indicate that Gardai do not currently believe Ms Cash's death was violent, suspecting instead a personal tragedy.
While Gardai have not officially named Ms Cash, several sources have confirmed her identity to the Irish Mirror, and her death is being treated as unexplained, reports the Irish Mirror.
The Gardaí issued a statement this afternoon, revealing: "Gardaí in Wexford continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman on board a passenger ferry en route to Rosslare, Co. Wexford on the evening of Tuesday, 25th February 2025.
"A post mortem examination is currently being carried out at Waterford University Hospital, the results of which will determine the nature and course of our investigation.
"A man arrested in connection with the investigation, remains currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.
"A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been assigned to provide support and information to the deceased's family.
"An Garda Síochána is not investigating any separate alleged Public Order Incidents on board this ferry sailing. Investigations are ongoing."
