Severe Weather Alert: Rain, Hail, and Potential Tornadoes to Hit Western Australia

2 years ago 638

Australians are bracing for another cold and wet week, with the possibility of a rare "cold-season tornado" in Western Australia. A low-pressure system is expected to bring significant rainfall and harsh weather conditions across various parts of the country.

Western Australia: Rain, Hail, and Possible Tornadoes

A low-pressure system is moving inland towards southwestern Western Australia and the Pilbara region, forecasting between 15mm and 40mm of rainfall this week. Perth is expected to receive heavy rain, with up to 15mm on Wednesday and 25mm on Thursday before clearer skies return on Saturday.

Anthony Sharwood from Weatherzone has warned of a winter cold front bringing hail and a brief "cold-season" tornado to WA's southwest. "During Thursday and Friday morning, the core of the cold air and the low-pressure centre will start to cross the region and develop into a cut-off low," Sharwood explained. "As the cut-off low ushers in the coldest air, scattered thunderstorms could occur across the southwest, while small hail is likely, and there's even the chance of some brief cold-season tornadoes."

Light snow is also possible in the Stirling Range, particularly on Friday morning. Perth will see temperatures rise to 19C over the weekend, just in time for the West Eagles' game against the Hawthorn Hawks on Sunday.

South Australia and Melbourne: Heavy Rain and Cold Temperatures

South Australia and Melbourne will experience some of the harshest weather conditions. Melbourne will have a colder week with temperatures peaking at 14C on Wednesday, 15C on Thursday, 16C on Friday, and 14C on Saturday, accompanied by showers later in the week. Adelaide will also face heavy rainfall throughout the week, with 15mm expected on Wednesday and continued rain into the weekend.

Eastern Queensland and Northern NSW: Continued Rain

Rain will persist across eastern Queensland, extending to northern New South Wales. Parts of central Queensland have already received over a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours. The region recorded falls of 30 to 60mm between Mackay and Townsville, with 59.8mm at Mackay Airport. The trough will continue to produce widespread rain on Wednesday and Thursday, with showers lingering into Friday.

Sydney: Dry but Cool Week Ahead

Sydney is set to miss the worst of the bad weather, with a dry and sunny week ahead. Temperatures are expected to reach 21C on Wednesday and 19C on both Thursday and Friday.
