The Twitter account of US Senator Bob Menendez was very late to USA's last-16 World Cup clash with Holland Saturday as a good luck post was sent out more than 11 hours after they kicked off.

Gregg Berhalter's team were beaten 3-1 by Holland in the knockout stages of the Qatar tournament, with the game getting underway at 10am ET.

Goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries sent America home with USA hearts broken by midday.

But the result did not seem to filter through to those running Menendez's Twitter profile as a post supporting the USMNT was sent out at 9:15pm Saturday night.

The upload read: 'Once again wishing good luck to @USMNT in today's FIFA World Cup match against the Netherlands. Let's keep the momentum going.'

The Tweet was deleted but former US international Taylor Twellman was quick to pick up on the error and shared it with his 385,000-plus followers.

Other social media users pointed out that the mistake was down to Tweet scheduling and those responsible for the account confused their timings.

One Tweet read: 'Social manager scheduled the tweet for 9:15 and got am/pm wrong.'

While another added: 'When tweet scheduling goes wrong, lol.'

President Biden was on the case and soon told the nation's soccer team 'you made us proud' after they were knocked out of the showpiece tournament.

Talking to Twitter shortly after the final whistle was blown in the game, Biden said: 'Fellas, you made us proud. We get up and keep going. Here’s to a bright future and 2026 back here at home.'

USA were losing 1-0 after just 10 minutes with the Dutch getting an all-important second goal just before halftime.

Haji Wright pulled on back for Berhalter's men but hope of a comeback lasted only five minutes.
