‘We’ve got to find an answer:’ Latest shooting in Daytona Beach frustrates officials

A shooting outside a nightclub in a busy area of Daytona Beach has officials trying to crack down on recent violence in the area.

The latest shooting happened outside Razzles nightclub Saturday night during an altercation involving several people. Police say at one point a woman pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds.

Two people were found on the ground when Daytona Beach police arrived. At least one person who was not involved in the fight was also shot. They’re all expected to be OK.

The Daytona Beach Police Department is looking for a person of interest in the case and is asking the public for help identifying them. Images were released on the agency’s Facebook page on Sunday.

The shooting is just the latest violent incident in the city. Commissioner Ken Strickland said the city was working on getting more security cameras and lights up to address the problem, but now he wants to look into metal detectors and other security measures similar to what Downtown Orlando implemented after a shooting last July.

“We can’t continue to let this kind of stuff go on, we’ve got to find an answer to it,” Strickland said Monday. “This violence is unacceptable. It’s unacceptable in this town, it’s a tourist town, and everyone should come here and feel safe.”

Sue Odena, a resident on nearby Wild Olive Avenue, said the lights and cameras will be welcome, as well as the opening of a police substation that keeps being put off, she says. Odena says the violence is from people coming to this part of Daytona Beach, not from the people living there.

“It’s a good neighborhood, all we have is good neighbors. All we want is some peace and quiet,” she said.
