What are the odds of a White Christmas in Northern Ireland this festive season

6 months ago 271

Despite Northern Ireland experiencing one of the mildest Novembers on record, it hasn't stopped a flurry of bets on a white Christmas already.

It seems the one question on everyone's mind this year is still will we see any of the white stuff on Christmas Day?

Although snow is most common in the UK and Ireland between the months of January and March, punters still line up every year to take a festive bet on the location most likely to see frosty weather.

A recent long-range weather forecast from the Global Forecast System has predicted a cold snap is set to hit the island of Ireland by the end of the month, triggering a festive inspired gamble as punters hope the cold snap will last into December.

Bookmaker BoyleSports has released its odds at five Irish airports for a white Christmas. Unfortunately for those who are hoping to wake up on December 25th to a white wonderland, Belfast is ranked as one of the cities which are the least likely to see snowfall.

Belfast International and Donegal Airports remain outsiders to have snow on the ground at odds of 13/2, with the bookies dodging a festive payout in NI since the Big Freeze in 2010.

But odds of 10/1 for snowfall to be recorded at Dublin Airport on December 25th were snapped up by punters, forcing BoyleSports to cut the odds of a white Christmas in the Irish capital into just 6/1.

Bettors on the west coast have also fancied a flutter on Shannon Airport being graced by snowfall on Christmas Day, with odds of 5/1 suggesting that the Co. Clare airport rates the second likeliest to be hit by the white stuff, ahead of Cork at 9/2.

Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “An updated weather forecast has seen punters put on a flurry of bets on a white Christmas this year. Despite a very mild October and November, a gamble is really starting to snowball!”
