(NewsNation) — Overwhelmingly, American adults don't trust businesses to use artificial intelligence(AI) responsibly and fear its impacts on the job market.
That's according to a new Gallup/Bentley University poll, which found that most U.S. adults (56%) believe AI has a neutral effect on the world. The outliers, however, were more than twice as likely to say AI does more harm than good, 31%, while only 13% say its pros outweigh its cons.
One thing respondents didn't stay neutral on was AI in the job market and business world.
Roughly 75% of Americans believe AI will reduce the total number of jobs in the next decade, consistent with 2023's survey results. Also consistent is adults' distrust of businesses to use AI responsibly.
77% of adults do not trust businesses much or at all, while only 2% said they trust businesses "a lot."
Some areas that garnered the most concern include recommending which employees should be hired (85%), driving a car (83%) and recommending medical (80%) or financial (71%) advice.
However, respondents did say that transparency about how AI is being used in business practices could "alleviate" their concerns about the tech. A majority, 57%, chose it over other solutions like clarity surrounding sources of data, security and privacy.
These results are based on a web survey of 5,835 U.S. adults conducted from April 29 to May 6, 2024.
