Chung Mong-joon, honorary chairman of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, has donated $7.5 million (10 billion won) to the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University, the institute said Wednesday.

He received his doctoral degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins SAIS in 1993. The university will use the endowed gift to establish the MJ Chung Distinguished Chair in Securities Studies initiative to promote research and education on security issues related to the Korean Peninsula with a special emphasis on the North Korean nuclear issue, and the role of the international community.

Chung is well-known as a seven-term lawmaker and a businessman. He served as the chairman of the board of trustees of Ulsan University and the Asan Foundation — the largest philanthropic organization in Korea.

To fulfill his sharing responsibility, he also launched the Asan Nanum Foundation in 2011 to foster entrepreneurship and leadership among young Koreans. Chung also served as vice president of FIFA.
