GS Group Chairman Huh Tae-soo
GS Group has been accelerating its efforts to find ways to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing technologies into its operations.
The nation's ninth-largest business group said Sunday that Chairman Huh Tae-soo and some 80 executives, including the CEOs of the group's affiliates, attended an AI and digital council meeting at its headquarters in Seoul on Wednesday to discuss strategies for the future.
This marks the first time for the group's top executives to gather together since their meeting at the beginning of this year.
GS Group said that its executives agreed on the necessity of using AI and digital technologies to improve ways of working and doing business, and discussed ways to brace for the era of innovative technologies such as quantum computing.
"Although we do not develop products like AI chips, we will become the winner, if we create new values through well-management of our data and use of AI technology for business transformation," Huh said.
The conglomerate said that two of its energy affiliates — GS Power and GS E&R — gave presentations at the latest meeting to show how they have utilized AI technology in their respective businesses.
"GS Power established a platform that shows data from power plants under its supervision, raising prospects for utilizing the data it collects to be used in machine learning," a GS Group official said.
"GS E&R developed its own system that predicts the size of wind power generation more accurately through the analysis of the characteristics of mountainous areas and various meteorological parameters, such as wind speed, temperature and atmospheric pressure."
Additionally, GS Group asked CEO Yune Ji-won of SDT, a startup specializing in quantum computing, to deliver a lecture during the council's meeting, so that the group can identify the sectors where it can use the quantum mechanics-based computing technology, which can make calculations exponentially faster.
"Our executives agreed that quantum computing's commercialization will become a game changer, which will bring industry-wide innovation," the GS Group official said.
"As our group engages in oil refining, petrochemicals, power generation and construction, the executives also agreed to the necessity of a 'quantum transformation.'"
