Hanwha Systems Co., the defense industry unit of Hanwha Group, plans to shut down its aviation satellite communication antenna subsidiary and focus on the ground-based antenna business for military applications, according to industry sources Thursday.
According to the sources, Hanwha Systems will shut down Hanwha Phasor, a subsidiary established after acquiring the British satellite communication antenna technology firm Phasor Solutions Ltd. in June 2020.
Hanwha Phasor had been developing electronically steerable antennas, enabling high-speed communication for maritime, terrestrial and in-flight use. Its primary business focus was the development antennas that enable stable internet connectivity onboard aircrafts.
Initially, Hanwha Systems believed this technology could be integrated with in-flight video services and telematics. The company, however, decided to focus on the ground-based antenna business tailored to the domestic defense market, as the profitability of the aviation-focused sector turned out to be lower than expected.
"A management decision was made to discontinue Hanwha Phasor due to the uncertainty of securing profitability," a Hanwha System official said. (Yonhap)
