Shipbuilder HD Hyundai is bolstering its partnerships with global tech companies to implement artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin into its business and shipyards in Korea.

The company’s latest partnerships with Palantir Technologies and Siemens focused on minimizing human intervention in building automated future shipyards. HD Hyundai’s Executive Vice Chairman Chung Ki-sun has stressed his commitment to “leading the global marine mobility technology through autonomous operation and sustainable energy ecosystem.”

Chung has recently appeared in a promotional video by Palantir Technologies, a software company based in the United States that enables AI-driven decision-making. Palantir released the video on its YouTube channel on Wednesday, showing how its partnership with HD Hyundai is helping the digitalization of the latter's shipyards. The video was a full-length version of a clip first unveiled at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, last month.

The video introduced a blueprint of HD Hyundai's Future of Shipyard (FOS) project, demonstrating how the Korean company is using Palantir Technologies' software platform, Foundry, for the shipyard project. HD Hyundai has been pursuing FOS since 2021, integrating digital technologies such as data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, automation, and AI. The company expects to complete the project by 2030.

When the project is completed, the company aims to minimize human intervention. Productivity is expected to increase by 30 percent while shipbuilding time will be reduced by the same rate.

"Together with Palantir Technologies, (we are) drawing on the latest innovation in AI, digital twins, and so much more to transform our shipyards, unlocking a whole new level of productivity and safety,” Chung said in the video.

Emile Victor, forward deployed engineer of Palantir Technologies, said, “I believe their commitment to leveraging software for operational innovation positions the two companies as leaders in digital transformation within the global shipbuilding industry.”

In March last year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang captured global attention by showcasing HD Hyundai’s Digital Shipyard and LNG Carrier in real-time using advanced graphics technology at Nvidia GTC 2024.

HD Hyundai partnered with Siemens to create a digital twin of large-scale shipyard images using Nvidia's graphics technology. This project was highlighted as one of Nvidia's key collaboration cases.

HD Hyundai established its European R&D Center in Germany in 2022 and the India Technology Center in Pune in 2019.
