The Korea Airports Corp. (KAC) has succeeded in localizing and commercializing tactical air navigation (TACAN), for which the country had so far relied entirely on imports, the company said Thursday.
Dubbed the “lighthouse in the sky,” TACAN is a key piece of equipment that provides defense and distance information for military aircraft.
Based on the original technology of the ground-fixed TACAN systems developed in 2016, KAC also succeeded in developing ship-mounted TACAN and passed technical specifications and performance tests last month.
In addition, the company obtained 23 international certifications of 13 types of U.S. defense technology standards and passed the government's performance conformity check.
KAC is currently bidding for the delivery of ship-based TACAN to the Navy, aiming to win a 30 trillion won ($20.9 billion) order for the entire 30 sets of TACANs that the Defense Acquisition Program Administration is planning to order by 2028.
Also, KAC has completed the installation of a fixed TACAN for the modernization project of local airbases at Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, and Gangneung, Gangwon Province, as well as Indian military airfields this year.
"As an airport operator and the only company in the world that directly develops navigation equipment, the Korea Airports Corp. is elevating its status in the global defense industry market," said Lee Jung-ki, KAC’s acting president. "We will further strengthen our R&D capabilities in the future."
