The Seoul Mobility Show will reclaim its luster by transforming itself into a Korean version of the prominent U.S. tech show CES and widening its coverage from conventional automobiles to a broader range of cutting-edge technologies, an organizing committee for the biennial auto fair said Wednesday.

The upcoming mobility show is scheduled to run for 11 days beginning April 3 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. Formerly known as Seoul Motor Show, it changed its name in 2021 to seek a breakthrough amid its falling popularity.

In 2019, a group of 21 auto brands took part in the event, but the figure is declining rapidly as carmakers are reluctant to expand their promotional spending for the show.

Only 12 brands will showcase their latest achievement by joining the event this year. They include Hyundai Motor, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.

KG Mobility and Tesla, which participated in the previous event, decided not to have a booth at the upcoming fair. The organizing committee said Tesla opted not to join due to instructions from its headquarters. KG Mobility will also be absent due to a lack of new vehicles.

“Our goal is to change the event format just like CES, as the world’s largest tech exhibition in the United States blurs boundaries in technologies and mobility,” Kang Nam-hoon, chairman of the organizing committee, told reporters during a press conference.

“Visitors can watch key mobility tech trends in areas such as urban air mobility, robotics and autonomous driving at the upcoming Seoul Mobility Show 2025, and this is just a beginning for our grand transformation,” he said.

The organizing committee expects the total number of visitors for the upcoming event to top 600,000.

Of particular note is that a Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, BYD, will attend the event for the first time. The company made its debut here in January and started sales for its flagship Atto 3 EVs.

BYD placed its name on a list of the upcoming show’s headline partners along with HD Hyundai and Lotte Group. HD Hyundai will showcase its next-generation excavator for the first time during the upcoming event. Lotte is scheduled to unveil its driverless shuttle bus that will also be available for visitors.

Kang spoke highly of the diversity of the Seoul Mobility Show 2025.

“We will introduce the most diverse mobility products and services in our three-decade history,” he said. “The show will present a future mobility vision that will blur boundaries among land, sea and air."
