PORTSMOUTH Va. (WAVY) – TikTok is now facing a lawsuit from Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares.

He says he is suing the app and ByteDance Ltd., the China-based parent company of TikTok, for misrepresenting harmful content and allowing the Chinese government access data.

In the lawsuit, it alleges the app was intentionally designed to be addictive for adolescent users and the companies deceived parents and Virginians about TikTok’s content.

“TikTok harms our kids and exposes them to severe profanity, sexually explicit material, violence, mature themes, and drug and alcohol content,” said Attorney General Jason Miyares.

This is not the first time Miyares has filed a lawsuit against a social media company. In October 2023, Miyares and 40 other states filed a lawsuit against Meta.
