COLOMBO: The Department of Immigration and Emigration has announced the reintroduction of an online appointment system for passport processing, set to begin on November 6, 2024. This new system not only covers passport application submissions but also facilitates the collection of completed passports, offering a more streamlined experience for the public.

Acting Controller General D.M.D. Nilusha Balasuriya shared the details of this initiative during a press conference in Colombo. She highlighted that the online system will allow individuals to book appointments anytime, from any location, through the department’s official website. She confirmed that, under the new system, token dates for passport appointments will be available starting December 1.

“Starting November 6, the online reservation system will enable individuals to secure appointments on any day, around the clock, with a limited number of tokens available for same-day reservations. Once these are filled, users can schedule a future date for their appointments as well,” Mrs. Balasuriya explained.

She also advised the public that the department will no longer accept in-person reservations after the system’s launch. The transition to a fully online model is expected to reduce congestion at the department and improve service efficiency for all passport-related needs.
