A proposal to increase bus fares is scheduled to be presented to the Cabinet today (23).

The National Transport Commission stated that the recent rise in fuel prices, particularly the increase in Lanka Auto Diesel prices, has significantly impacted the existing fare formula. According to the Commission, this adjustment indicates that current bus fares should increase by more than 10%.

Director General of the National Transport Commission, Dr. Nilan Miranda, confirmed that a Cabinet paper has already been submitted seeking approval to implement the proposed fare revision.

Accordingly, the revised bus fare proposal is expected to be presented to the Cabinet today for approval.

However, several bus associations claimed that the fare revision should have been implemented yesterday (22). Representatives of these associations had requested a discussion with the National Transport Commission regarding the fare hike but stated that they did not receive a satisfactory response.

As a result of the delay, bus associations warned that they may withdraw bus services today.

Chairman of the Private Bus Owners’ Association, Gemunu Wijeratne, also stated that it would not be feasible to continue operating buses until fares are increased.

Meanwhile, the National Transport Commission reiterated that the proposed revision—expected to exceed a 10% increase—will be submitted to the Cabinet today for final approval.
